Should I Oil My Thread?

Posted: 12 July 2010 at 6:16 a.m.
ASK DR. BOB
We often receive questions from our readers.
From Bobbi in Arizona: "I ran across a an unusual piece of advice recently, and wondered if you would comment. While taking a class, I was told that to make my threads last longer, I should soak them in oil for a few minutes when I first bring them home. Have you ever heard of this?
Dr Bob:
Yes, I hear frequent reports of some being told to use a silicone type gel to lubricate thread. It definitely will not make thread last longer but it makes low and medium quality thread run better through the machine because they becomes so slick.
The problem is that the machine can become over-lubricated and stop working properly. The oily substance is also listed as a toxic substance. A little may not hurt, but soaking all threads in it is not a good idea. If a thread requires this much lubricant, it is not a good thread.
We do not use it or recommend it.
