Working With MasterPiece Thread

Posted: 9 July 2010 at 5:42 a.m.
Question:
I purchased my first spool of Alex Andersen's MasterPiece brand thread by Superior Threads. That thread breaks no matter what I do. Adjusted tension, changed needles, sewed on thinner quilt sandwich; nothing works. Could this have been a bad batch of thread?
Answer:
Assuming you have a spool (not a cone) and are using a home machine, please try this:
1. Use a #80/12 needle
2. Set the top tension setting between 1.5 and 2.0
3. Position the spool on the vertical pin so the thread unwinds straight from the side of the spool (with the spool rotating). The thread should not unwind over the end of the spool.

Response:
Thank you for your advice! I thought I was going to have to throw that spool out. I followed your suggestions and ended up using a top tension of 1 in order to get the tension looking good on both sides of the fabric. Thanks again for helping me out of a frustrating situation!

Hi Debby, Thank you so much for your comment, because we love to help. We are glad to hear that when using a cone, you also use the Thread Stand. MasterPiece on a cone needs to wind off the top. We also agree with Shawn, a topstitch needle is important, and on our web site we recommend 80/12. *You can experiment and see which size your project likes best. Recommended tension setting is anywhere from 2.0-4.0 on our web site, but also try going down to a 1.5 if you experience breakage. And our last suggestion: Do you use MasterPiece in the bobbin also? It's not required, but might help in your situation. Feel free to e-mail us if you have any other concerns.

Debby, I would definitely try using the Superior Topstitch needle to start with. While I have never had to change my tension (Janome MC10000) to get good results with this thread I do know that for whatever reason some machines do require it. Superior stands behind their product so don't hesitate to work with them about the problem.

I've been using MP for years. Use a 90 needle, have the spool on the horizontal spool and use the preset tension. I haven't had any problems to speak of. The only time I have had breakage was when I was doing a lot of machine embroidery using a cone. Silly me, even though I had read the manual, I didn't remember that there were two ways to reset the speed of the machine. I slowed the machine down for embroidery and didn't have any more problems. I sew on a Pfaff 7570, a 1473 at work and a Babylock Ellisimo at home.

I tried to use Master Piece on a large cone with the cone stand i purchased from Superior and also had trouble with breakage. I gave up and used some other thread i had....but since I purchased 3 cones of MP I would appreciate any advice for solving the same problem when using a large cone & stand (I did make sure the thread was not getting stuck anywhere from cone holder to machine)

This is interesting, I use Masterpiece alot and have never adjusted the tension and always get a good stitch.
