Texture Magic Tuesday/ Faux Smocked Sundress

Posted: 28 September 2010 at 7:04 a.m.
Our thanks today goes to Susan Stewart for sharing with us her beautiful Faux Smocked Sundress combining heirloom sewing with Texture Magic.
Susan offers a few tips for creating the faux smocking:
"Stitch horizontal rows of decorative stitches from the fabric side. Longer stitch lengths (around 4.0mm) and repetitive stitches that build up thread give the best look. Too much dense stitch work prevents the Texture Magic from shrinking properly. Some machines have stitches designed specifically to look like smocking, and these work well. The dress was stitched on a Bernina 730.
After the stitching is complete, cut the Texture Magic on the back between the rows of stitching. This causes the Texture Magic to shrink more horizontally than vertically, giving a look more like hand smocking. Because the cut and steamed edges of the Texture Magic could be itchy, lining the "smocked" panel is recommended."

We asked Susan to share a little bit about herself:
"I live in Pittsburg, KS and have been sewing all my life. I started teaching at the Martha Pullen school and writing for her publications in 1990. Seven years ago I caught the quilting bug and have worked at incorporating both heirloom sewing techniques and digitized machine embroidery in my quilts, which, to my delight, have won many prizes at big shows. I am a major consumer of thread, using up to 60,000 yards in a machine embroidered quilt! I love The Bottom Line, which I use as a bobbin thread for all of my machine embroidery, and also for both top and bottom threads for quilting. I can't wait to test run your new Kimono silk thread!
