Black Light Threads - Reflective and Glowing Threads

Posted: 16 January 2012 at 7:11 a.m.

Many longarm machines offer a Black Light option when quilting which allows the quilter to see certain threads better.  What makes some dyed threads "glow" under a black light?

Superior Threads Chemistry 101 - A black light (bulb, LED, or tube) gives off ultraviolet light which happens to be highly energetic. The human eye can't see this light of the spectrum.  (This is perhaps why it became known as "black light".) Fluorescent substances absorb the ultraviolet light and then re-emit it almost instantaneously. Threads which are dyed with fluorescent pigments or threads which are bright white will absorb the black light and reflect it back in a wonderful glowing sheen.

Here is a selection of our threads viewed under standard fluorescent light

Are there any safety concerns for the dyes used to make it glow under a black light? Irritation from handling the thread, that kind of thing. Is the MSDS avaliable? Thanks.

I am looking for dark blue to indigo glow in the dark UV thread and any goldfish thread that does the same would've great! Do you have such darker colours? All I can find are the lighter pastel colours which I don't want. Thanks! Donna H

Wanda, Currently reflective thread does not exist. Reflective material is made with tiny glass beads. The technology to either replicate the shine with polymer or make the glass beads flexible enough to be sewn doesn't exist yet. Hopefully it will soon.

I love working with your glow in the dark threads! They are easy to use and stay bright for a very long time. I've used them for embroidering as well as quilting, and they are wonderful. My favorite project in which to use them has been pillowcases or small quilts for youngsters who are trying to get over their fear of sleeping in the dark. The threads are charged while getting ready for bed (bath, brushing teeth, etc.) and then they see if they can fall asleep before the "light" goes out. Thanks again for such great products.
