Superior Spotlight: Cathy B.

Posted: 30 May 2014 at 6 a.m.

We had our fabulous friend Cathy B. visit us recently at our Superior Threads Headquarters in St. George, Utah.  She is a serious sewer and when her husband gave her money and encouragement to go clothes and shoe shopping, she went fabric and thread shopping instead!  She told us about her love of all things sewing and that she had brought her sewing with her on vacation.  She set up a cute little sewing nook in her hotel room!

 Cathy's Sewing Nook

Where have you taken your sewing? Have you taken your machine on vacation with you before?

My little Bernina Patchwork Edition travelled with us in our RV for several years. Made several quilts and many useful items. We have since sold the RV but we continue to travel with this Bernina and my monster Bernina 830 between AZ and home each winter.

In the 70's I took my Feather Weight to Hawaii for a long vacation and made several Hawaiian outfits with their fabulous florals. Don't think I'll every check it through with the luggage again because I had done some hand washing of my panties the night before and almost forgot them when leaving but grabbed them and threw them in my Feather Weight case. Well as I was waiting for my luggage here comes my Feather Weight opened with my panties hanging out .

I actually bought a sewing machine that was possible for me to carry around! It's not so tiny--Bernina artista 630. It goes where I go! But I normally only go in the Rv. I think the vacation would just be a horrible wipe without it!

I take my Janome Jem with me on all vacations. I bought a Tutto case which fits under the seat in front of me on the plane. I take along quilt projects and sew during my down times. Love it.

When my daughter was 10, she went to a horse day camp for a week. She was too young to fly there by herself, so I went with her. My days in the hotel were spent making and completing 2 quilts for friends she was with at camp. My carry on was my sewing machine in a suitcase. My iron and notions were in my checked suitcase and I bought fabric and batting when we landed. What FUN! I'm sure the housekeepers had a good laugh!

I had to be in Chicago for 3 1/2 weeks of new hire training, so I brought my sewing machine and lots of supplies to the hotel. I couldn't afford much in the way of entertainment or eating out, so this worked out perfectly -- I didn't just sit around watching TV. But I looked like one of the Beverly Hillbillies moving in!! LOL
