Q. How does your Vanish thread dissolve in water? I've been told it is great for basting quilts together but dissolving thread doesn't make much sense to me.
A. Our Vanish thread is made from a special fibrous blend of Polyvinyl Alcohol. Through advanced processing techniques, we are able to make a strong thread, which can be run in a high-speed machine without breaking. For temporary basting, many will use Vanish as a top thread with a smooth polyester thread in the bobbin (such as Bottom Line) and will stitch a basting stitch to secure all layers of the quilt sandwich together.
Once all the quilting is completed, place your quilt in the washing machine or soak it in warm water and the thread will dissolve away! Vanish will start to dissolve in water that is at least 90º F. Vanish-Extra will take longer to dissolve than Vanish-Lite because it's twice as thick.
