CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM BOB AND HEATHER

Christmastime can be an exciting time.  The music, the lights, and the children's excitement all create a feeling of joy.  If we invite it, t
he spirit of love, kindness, and tender forgiveness fills our hearts.  Christmas has a way of encouraging us to become better people.  At work, we discuss many business books, self improvement books, and motivational books.  I remember a conversation I had with a colleague a while back. I asked, “What books do you read for self improvement and motivation?”  His reply was, “The Scriptures.”  I have never forgotten that.  There is no better source from which to learn.  All the problems in the world would be solved if we lived by the two great commandments recorded in Matthew 22:36-39.
36   Master, which is the great commandment in the law?
37  Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38  This is the first and great commandment.
39  And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

More specific detail is provided in the Ten Commandments, contained in the Old Testament, scripture that is shared by many of the world’s religions.  Such simple statements, packed with truth, offer peace, happiness, and real solutions if only we would obey.
I have sometimes wondered which commandment is the most important to me, right now.  My answer has changed over time and I have realized the most important commandment to me is the one I’m struggling with at that particular time.

At this Christmastime, let’s show our gratitude by trying to love our Heavenly Father and His son, Jesus Christ, with all our heart, with all our soul, and with all our mind.  As we do this, loving those around us will become easier.  God has given us the gift of His Son, who gave the world light, knowledge, truth, hope, love, and a perfect example.  It is in Him we place our faith, believing His words as we go through life.
The only gifts we can give back to our Heavenly Father and his Son are hearts full of gratitude and our willingness and effort to do better and to obey.  The gifts we can give to those around us are friendship, love, kind words, forgiveness, and help.  As we do this, we experience real joy and that joy increases as we try to do our best each day.  Nothing lifts our spirits more than doing something to help a person in need.  These are the times we feel close to God because we are assisting Him in His work.  May the comforting spirit of Christmas burn within our hearts and continue throughout the new year.
Merry Christmas from Bob and Heather Purcell

      EDUCATION:  Q & A WITH BOB. PART 2

Q.  What's the best piecing thread?
A.  MasterPiece.  It's a very low lint, high grade cotton thread, so it is iron safe.  MasterPiece is fine (#50), smooth, makes beautiful seams, and is available in many colors.

Q.  What’s the best quilting thread?
A.  No simple answer for this question.  It depends on the look you want to achieve.  Some prefer cotton; others polyester; others metallic.  Sometimes we want the thread to blend so we choose a fine thread.  Sometimes we want the thread to show, so we choose a medium or heavier thread or a high-sheen thread.  Sometimes we want variegated. Sometimes we want a bright look.

Q.  What’s the best embroidery thread?
A.  Trilobal polyester.   It has a high sheen, is strong, and is colorfast.  Rayon is not recommended due to the lack of colorfastness.  Magnifico is our premium embroidery thread.

Q.  Why do the pros use and recommend Topstitch needles?
A. The Topstitch needle is like the hybrid needle, taking the best features from other needle styles and combining them into one.  It has an oversize eye, which allows more room for the thread while at the same time, reducing stress on the thread.  The point is a light sharp point.  It is not ball point, but not razor sharp.  The Topstitch needle really does make a difference.

Q.  How about titanium-coated needles?
A.  These are long-life needles, lasting 5-8 times as long as regular needles.  Titanium coating is an ultra-thin ceramic coating which reduces wear and tear.  For only 20 cents more than a regular  needle, you get 5-8 needles' worth.  That is a real money saver.  Our Topstitch needles are titanium coated.

Q.  Over the past few years, what do you think are some of the best ideas Superior has had?
A.  1.  Our absolute guarantee on every product we sell.  The guarantee is that it will work or we will replace it.
2.  Superior University.  Every month, we send thread or other related product and a simple pattern to to teach a technique.  In 60-90 minutes, you learn or use something new which you can apply to future sewing projects.
3.  Superior Jr. College is similar to Superior University, but geared toward children who want to learn to sew. It creates the opportunity for you to share your love of sewing with children and grandchildren.
4.  Thread of the Month clubs provide benefits to those who want to gradually collect all the colors within a particular line of thread.  Special discounts and free shipping.

Q.  What are some of the best tools?
A.  1.  For longarm machines, the Towa Bobbin Tension Gauge and the Top Tension Pro.
2.  For home machines, the new Superior Thread Holder, which allows both spools and cones to unwind in the proper manner.
3.  Color Cards made with the actual thread.  This eliminates all the guesswork when trying to find the perfect color.
4.  Thread Therapy DVD. It’s available free of charge (worth $10,000 at least).  See Specials below.  We hear from many who tell us this information has changed their sewing life and they wish they had heard this information 30 years ago.

Q.  Why are so many quilts quilted with poly? Won't that tear the fabric?
A. That’s the biggest myth in the quilting world.  Please watch the DVD to see proof.

Q.  In your work, what drives you crazy?
A.  People who absolutely refuse to touch the tension settings on their machines.  I could fix their problems, but they refuse to act.  It’s like buying a new TV and refusing to ever change channels.

Q.  What’s your long term goal?
A.  To educate the sewing world.  To make things as simple as possible.

Q.  Do you like selling thread?
A.  I prefer to think that we sell success.  We solve problems.  We teach.  We help quilters, embroiderers, and all who sew to achieve success by introducing the best tools available and by providing the knowledge necessary to succeed.

      BOB'S SUPERIOR JOKE

After being away on business for a week before Christmas, James thought it would be nice to bring his wife a little gift.
"I'd like to get some perfume for my wife," he said to the cosmetics clerk. She showed him a bottle costing $80.
"Too expensive," said James , so she returned with a smaller bottle for $50.
"That’s still quite a bit," James replied.
Growing disgusted, the clerk brought out a tiny $25 bottle.
James grew agitated, "What I mean," he said, "is I'd like to see something real cheap."
So the clerk handed him a mirror.
