Basting is the process of securing two or more layers of fabric or other materials together, using long stitches or pins, in preparation for stitching. In quilting, basting prepares the quilt sandwich for hand or machine quilting. Basting your quilt with thread instead of pins allows for a tighter fit of the top fabric, batting, and backing fabric which results in a smoother quilt.
