Quilt Thread

Quilt ThreadWe have specialized in high-quality quilt thread since 1998. Superior Threads guarantees every spool of thread we sell. Do you know of any other companies that do that?

Cotton
The cotton quilt thread by Superior Threads are made from certified Egyptian-grown cotton. Many quilt threads are labeled as Egyptian cotton, but are not really from Egypt. Our threads actually are. Superior Threads uses the best extra-long staple cotton we can find. Our thread processing is done in Japan, which is known for its high quality and advancements in the thread industry. Every part of the production process, such as carding, combing the fibers, spinning and twisting the strands, dyeing the thread, and winding onto spools or cones, is done by adhering to our detailed specifications. King Tut and MasterPiece threads by Superior Threads are two of the best cotton quilt threads produced.

Polyester
There are rumors that polyester quilt thread can cut cotton fabric. These rumors are false. Even 100% cotton shirts are stitched together with polyester thread. Polyester thread is great to use as a quilt thread. Polyester thread can also be produced to resemble silk or cotton finishes. Polyester quilt threads are usually considered to be colorfast, are heat resistant (iron safe up to medium heat), and have a melting temperature of 460 degrees.

  1. Spun polyester threads are created by spinning or twisting together shorter lengths of polyester fibers. This type of polyester thread is similar to the method used to make cotton threads. These are then twisted together to produce a thread of the desired size. Spun polyester quilt threads look much like cotton thread and our strong and durable. Our spun polyester is called Poly Quilter.
  2. Multi-filament polyester is a quilt thread made up of continuous fibers. This is the strongest, and most common, type of polyester. Multi-filament strands are twisted together to form a smooth, lint-free thread. The products we sell in multi-filament polyester are Bottom Line, So Fine, Brytes, and LAVA.
  3. Trilobal polyester is a multi-filament twisted quilt thread, known for its high sheen. It has a bright appearance comparable to rayon or silk. Trilobal polyester fibers give an attractive sparkle to textiles because they reflect more light. Our Rainbows, Highlights, Nature Colors, Super Brights, Art Studio Colors, and Living Colors threads are this type of polyester. Trilobal polyester is not as strong as regular multi-filament polyester, so you must choose between strength and high sheen.

Rayon
Rayon is not usually colorfast and is a weaker fiber; therefore, it is not recommended as a quilt thread.

Nylon
Because nylon has a low heat tolerance, often goes brittle over time, and isn’t colorfast, nylon is not recommended as a quilt thread. If you use monofilament or invisible thread, make sure you choose a polyester thread such as MonoPoly

Silk
Silk is a great natural fiber for machine quilting, but it is often expensive.
