Apparel Thread Selection
There are many different types of thread to use for apparel sewing applications. Since it can be difficult to cover every type of clothing construction and apparel sewing application in an easy-to-understand article, we've listed several of our recommend thread lines below that are most commonly used when sewing clothing. If you have a specific thread need, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org and we will do our best to provide you the thread you need.
Sergin' General is our corespun polyester thread which has been created specifically for sewing on a serger. As a Tex 30 thread, it is very strong, the colors blend into the fabric, and it doesn't add bulk to seams. Available in 50 colors.
Polyarn is a textured polyester thread that has all the traits of "woollie-like" nylon thread, with the added benefits of a polyester fiber. Polyarn is a Tex 26 thread, has excellent coverage and is fantastic for rolled hems and is made for the loopers of a serger. If sewing on stretchy material, such as knit fabrics or swimsuit material and the accommodating the stretch of the stitch is important, Polyarn is our recommendation. Available in 36 colors.
ProLock is a textured polyester thread that has all the traits of "woollie-like" nylon thread, with the added benefits of a polyester fiber. ProLock is similar to Polyarn, but is slightly thicker. It is a Tex 35 thread and is used more in clothing applications where stretch isn't as critical. ProLock is available in 60 colors.
Superior Low Melt is a nylon thread created to melt. While it may sound like an oxymoron, Super Low Melt is widely used in cut and sew and commercial sew houses for quick, temporary placement of pockets, interlining, and stacked or appliqued applications. Superior Low Melt is used as a bobbin thread and when pressed with an iron or sandwiched in a heated pressboard, the thread will melt and form a temporary bond between layers of fabric. A final decorative stitch will keep the layered fabric in place permanently. Available in two thicknesses and colors.
