January 2011 Newsletter

We have received many requests to wind our new #100 silk on prewound bobbins.  We considered this but concluded that the cost would be too high. The regular spools of silk hold 220 yds. and are priced at $5.99.  We could wind about 150 yds. on a bobbin but that would put the price of a single bobbin over $4.00 so a set would be expensive with little advantage.

NEW Thread of the Month Clubs Added
You may never pay shipping again!  Club members receive FREE (USA addresses) or discounted (international) shipping on retail Club orders including add-on orders.  See our Thread of the Month page for details and additional benefits.  Last month we announced our Thread of the Month Club for many of our popular thread lines including King Tut (spools and cones), Kimono Silk, Rainbows, So Fine, Bottom Line, and MasterPiece.  In addition to these seven clubs, we just added one more -- an Embroidery Club.  The Embroidery Club offers six spools (solid colors) each month from our 40 wt. trilobal (high sheen) polyester threads including Nature Colors, Highlights, Art Studio Colors, and Living Colors lines of thread.

The Thread of the Month Club is now available to retail stores (to make available to your customers) and other general wholesale/business accounts.  If you have a wholesale account, please log in and see the Thread of the Month page for details.

I've heard that we use less than 10% of our brains.  That is probably true for politicians but for the rest of us, I doubt that 90% of our brain is wasted.  Think of all the work it does:  thinking, emotional feeling, learning, memory storage, recalling, speaking, motivating, concentrating, relaxing and leisure.  We hear often that a balanced life is a happy life.  We need work and play. Things just seem to go better when we are balanced.  If one area is ignored, it can upset our overall well being.  So it is with machines.  Some sewing and quilting machines seem to be in better balance than others.  Some require more training and exercising than others. Speed, top tension, bobbin tension, needles, timing, thread, machine condition, and even fabric all work together to create the end result.  If one area is off, it will affect the general well being of the overall machine functioning.  Fortunately it is easier and faster to adjust a machine than our brain.  With proper knowledge, any good machine should be able to use any good thread.  Our goal is to teach you how because our machines should serve us well.  Our research at the School of Threadology is focused on successfully sewing with quality threads on all models of both home machines and longarm machines.  We provide the results of our research and testing to you and much of this information is in the form of our numerous Reference Guides.  Use good thread, select the right needle type and size, adjust the tensions properly and enjoy a smooth ride.  Next month we will introduce results of our one-year research project that will be a huge breakthrough in successful longarm quilting.

Oh No. The price is going up. . . but just on one item.  This is not a fun way to start the new year but we have resisted as long as possible.  The increase in world cotton prices and the continuing weak dollar are affecting us.  King Tut 500 yd. spools will increase from $7.99 to $8.99 starting in February 2011.  The price of the 2,000 yd. cones will stay the same.
Exception and Some Good News.  The Thread of the Month Club for King Tut 500 yd. spools will remain at $7.99 per spool through the end of the year.

1. Stella Blunt.  Could the Thread of the Month Club offer be a gift for someone and shipped to that addy, but billed to me?
Bob's Note: Yes.  There is one field for billing and a separate field for shipping.  Your friend is going to love you even more. BFF.

2. Dixie Decker.  I love the Thread of the Month Club idea.  However, I use King Tut exclusively and only buy it in the 2,000 yd. cone size.  Would you consider having another option for those of us wanting that size to offer 2 cones per month with the same free shipping offer?
Bob's Note: OK.  That is now available.

3. Linda Read.  Do you have plans to add a group of cone threads to the monthly club? I am a fairly new midarm quilter and I would love a monthly club of 2-3 cones of quilting thread. This would be a great way to build up my thread stash. Thanks.
Bob's Note: see #2 above.

4. Sharon Atwill.  I was getting ready to buy MiPad case pattern and saw that it uses Soft and Stable.  However, the description doesn't say what size package of Soft and Stable to buy.  Would it be possible to add the Soft and Stable yardage requirements to the pattern descriptions?
Bob's Note: Done.

Click here and sing along. Here are the words:
Longarm Rap.  Words by Bob & Heather Purcell
My Pfaff is in the kitchen
My Bernina's in the hall
A Janome in the bedroom
I'll remodel the house in the fall

(chorus - repeat twice)
Yo! Move out the car!
Move out the car!
Move out the car!
This place is too small!

My house feels like it's shrinking
There's thread in every room
My family's going crazy
That add-on is coming soon!
I cut on the kitchen table
I piece in the family room
I bind when riding in the car
Yo! Quilting's my favorite tune!
Next is the garage!
A new longarm is on the way
Move out the car, throw out the junk
Cause quilting is here to stay!

A husband and wife were having dinner at a very fine restaurant when this absolutely stunning young woman comes over to their table, gives the husband a big passionate kiss, then says she'll see him later and walks away.  The wife glares at her husband and says, "Who was that!?"
"Oh," replies the husband, "she's my mistress."
"Well, that's the last straw," says the wife. "I've had enough.  I want a divorce!"
"I can understand that, "replies her husband, "but remember, if we get a divorce it will mean no more shopping trips to Paris , no more wintering in Barbados, no more summers in Tuscany , no more Jaguar in the garage and no more yacht club.  But the decision is yours."
Just then, a mutual friend enters the restaurant with a gorgeous babe on his arm.
"Who's that woman with Alex?” asks the wife.
"That's his mistress," says her husband.
"Ours is prettier," she replies.
