Mid-June 2011 Superior Threads Newsletter

WISE WORDS FROM MOTHER SUPERIOR: NEEDLES
Most professionals recommend changing a regular needle every 6 to 8 hours or with every new project.  Titanium-coated needles have changed this because they last 5 to 8 times longer than the standard needle.  These needles have a microscopically thin coating of titanium nitride which makes the surface much more wear resistant than regular needles.  Superior is the only company that has a titanium-coated Topstitch style needle. The Topstitch style is recommend for most sewing applications.
- for 60 wt., monofilament, and #100 threads: use a #70/10 Topstitch needle
- for 50 wt. threads (piecing wt. threads): use a #80/12 Topstitch needle
- for 40 wt. threads (quilting and embroidery): use a #90/14 Topstitch needle
- for 30 wt. and heavier threads: use a #100/16 Topstitch needle

EDUCATION: QUICK START GUIDE
I recently bought a new cell phone.  The owner's manual was an 80-page book which I'm sure very few people actually read.  There was also a small Quick Start Guide card that contained all the important information for the less patient.  That's what I wanted.  Just tell me how to use the phone now without having to study 80 pages.  By following a few easy steps I was using the phone within a few minutes.  I can study the owner's manual later when I want more detailed information.  So here is a Quick Start Thread Guide for quilters, embroiderers, and general sewers.  A more detailed list is available in our Thread Index and our Thread Selection Guide.

The Superior Quick Start Thread Guide

First, consult the Thread Reference Guides for needle and tension information.  We have one for longarm machines and one for home machines.

MasterPiece Price Increase
Cotton prices have substantially increased over the past year and we have hesitated to raise the price of MasterPiece but . . . from August, the price will be $8.99 for the 600 yd. spools. Through the end of July 2011, the price will remain at $7.50.
MasterPiece is the finest extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton available.  It is ideal for piecing, detail quilting, applique, and as a bobbin thread.  We are changing MasterPiece from a 2-ply extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton to a 3-ply extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton thread.  With a nice even, smooth twist on this thread, you probably will not notice a difference in thickness but you will notice a wonderful difference in strength.  The added strength is worth it.  Even our longarm machines like the new 3-ply MasterPiece for detail quilting.  Some colors are already available in 3-ply.

SUPERIOR FUN  It's not all work and no play around here.  During the summer, each Friday we take an hour and a half off and play SplashBall.  It's a game we invented and played in the swimming pool mixing basketball, water polo, and rugby.  Ryan, one of our talented staff, took a video of the event and made a 50-second movie trailer promo of SplashBall.  He very wisely edited out my missed shots and included the 3-point game-winning shot.  Now I'm waiting for the Dallas Mavericks to call.  Other Superior Fun videos include entertaining music videos by the Superior Singers and some time-lapse videos of a work days. Enjoy the vids.

BOB’S SUPERIOR JOKE of the MONTH
A motorcycle mechanic was working on the engine from a Harley-Davidson when he spotted a well-known cardiologist walk in his shop. The cardiologist was there waiting for the service manager to come and take a look at his bike when the mechanic shouted across the garage, "Hey Doc, come take a look at this."
A bit surprised, the cardiologist walked over to where the mechanic was working on the motorcycle. The mechanic stood up, wiped his hands on a rag and said, "So Doc, look at this engine. I open its heart, take the valves out, repair any damage, and then put them back in. When I finish, it works just like new. So how come I make $40,000 a year and you make over a million dollars a year when you and I are doing basically the same work?"
The cardiologist paused, smiled, leaned over, and then said to the mechanic, "Try doing it with the engine running."
