July 2011 Newsletter

So many ideas for silk threads.  Silk thread ranges from a very fine #100 silk to a heavier #16 silk and includes solid colors, variegated colors, and even silk embroidery floss.  Here is a page showing some recommended uses for each size of silk thread.  Recommended uses for Silk Threads

Education is power.  Education is freedom.  Education leads to success.  We can get answers to most questions if we know where to find them.  We have opportunities to learn from some of the most knowledgeable and skilled people in the industry and we share that information with you.  Last month we printed a Quick Start Guide in this newsletter.  Thanks to a wonderful idea form a customer, we have expanded it and put it in an easy-to-read spreadsheet format.  This Quick Start Guide indicates what each of our threads are for.  If you are looking for thread for piecing or quilting or embroidery or binding or serger and so on, this Guide will help.
Including the Quick Start Guide, our Reference Guide page lists eleven different useful reference guides.
1. Thread Reference Guide for Home Machines
2. Thread Reference Guide for Longarm Machines
3. Thread Index
4. Inventory Lists
5. UPS Shipping Transit Times
6. Thread Selection Guide
7. Troubleshooting Guide
8. Longarm Machines: Top and Bobbin Thread Tension Settings
9. How Tension Works.  An easy-to-understand diagram.
10. Color Compatibility Charts (matching colors across thread lines)
11. Quick Start Guide
The amount of knowledge and education contained in these guides provides the keys to success.  If some questions are not answered, please tell us and we will find the answer.  We are always looking for ways to improve.  Thank you for your questions and suggestions.

Special thanks to the Science Museum of Minnesota for running a special advertisement for King Tut during the Minnesota Quilters show.

MasterPiece Price Increases Next Month

Cotton prices have substantially increased over the past year and we have hesitated to raise the price of MasterPiece but . . . from August, the price will be $8.99 for the 600 yd. spools. Through the end of July 2011, the price will remain at $7.50.
MasterPiece is the finest extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton available.  It is ideal for piecing, detail quilting, applique, and as a bobbin thread.  We are changing MasterPiece from a 2-ply extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton to a 3-ply extra-long staple Egyptian-grown cotton thread.  With a nice even, smooth twist on this thread, you probably will not notice a difference in thickness but you will notice a wonderful difference in strength.  The added strength is worth it.  Even our longarm machines like the new 3-ply MasterPiece for detail quilting.  Some colors are already available in 3-ply.

SUPERIOR FUN  It's not all work and no play around here.  During the summer, each Friday we take an hour and a half off and play SplashBall.  It's a game we invented and played in the swimming pool mixing basketball, water polo, and rugby.  Ryan, one of our talented staff, took a video of the event and made a 50-second movie trailer promo of SplashBall.  He very wisely edited out my missed shots and included the 3-point game-winning shot.  Now I'm waiting for the Dallas Mavericks to call.  Other Superior Fun videos include entertaining music videos by the Superior Singers and some time-lapse videos of a work days. Enjoy the vids.

What I believe to be the most innovative quilting-related Internet company in the world is Websites For Quilters.  They also developed many websites in the quilting world including the FindMyFabric website, Quilter's Daily Special website.  We use them and highly recommend them.  (This is an unpaid plug for them because we like the superior work they do.)  For more information, please click here.  They have designed hundreds of websites for quilting-related individuals and companies as well as non-quilting related websites.

A couple had been married for sixty years. Though not young as they would like, they were both in very good health largely due to the wife's insistence on healthful foods and regular exercise during the last several decades. One day they were in an auto accident and found themselves at the Pearly Gates.  St. Peter escorted them inside and took them to a beautiful mansion furnished in gold and fine silks with a fully stocked kitchen and a waterfall in the master bath. A maid could be seen hanging their favorite clothes in the closet.
They gasped in astonishment when St. Peter said, "Welcome to Heaven. This will be your home now."
The old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost.
"Nothing," Peter replied. "This your reward in Heaven."
The old man looked out the window and saw a beautiful championship golf course, better then anything he had seen on Earth. "What are the greens fees?" grumbled the old man.
"This is heaven," St. Peter replied, "You can play free, all day every day."
Next they went to the clubhouse and saw a lavish buffet lunch with every imaginable cuisine laid out before them, from seafood to steaks to exotic deserts, and free flowing beverages.
"Don't even ask," said St. Peter to the man, "This is Heaven. It is all free for you to enjoy."
The old man looked around and glanced nervously at his wife.  "Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol foods?" he asked.
"That's the best part," St. Peter replied. "You can eat and drink as much as you like of whatever you like and you will never get fat or sick. This is Heaven!"
The old man then asked, "No gym to work out at?" "Not unless you want to," was the answer.
"No testing my sugar or blood pressure or . . ."
"Never again. All you do here is enjoy yourselves."
The old man glared at his wife and said, "You and your #&*%!* bran muffins! We could have been here ten years ago!"
