Superior Threads November 2011 Newsletter

WISE WORDS FROM MOTHER SUPERIOR
Have you wondered why thread gets thinner as the weight or thread size number gets larger?  It is confusing but there is a reason behind this system.  Here is a simple analogy to illustrate why:
The goal is to determine how much thread it takes to weigh one pound.
Thread A takes 20 miles to weigh a pound so it is labeled as 20 wt.
Thread B takes 40 miles to weight a pound and is labeled 40 wt.  It is a finer thread because it takes 40 miles to weigh one pound.
Thread C takes 60 miles to weigh a pound so it is even finer yet.

EDUCATION: Monofilament threads
I recently received an e-mail asking if invisible monofilament thread is iron safe.  She had heard that it melts if ironed.  That is a commonly asked question and most likely due to hearing sad stories of monofilament threads melting and damaging a sewing project.  Here is the truth.
There are two main types of monofilament threads: nylon and polyester.  Traditionally, most monofilament thread has been nylon.  Nylon is strong but it has some negative properties for sewing thread.  It tends to go brittle over time, discolors (yellows), and has low heat tolerance.  Nylon melts at approximately 400 degrees F. Although most irons do not have a numerical temperature setting, many irons can melt nylon when set at medium or high heat.
The preferred material for monofilament thread is polyester.  Polyester does not discolor, go brittle, or have a low melting point.  Polyester melts at the 480 to 510 degree Fahrenheit range and most irons stay well below this temperature up to the medium heat setting.
Our MonoPoly monofilament invisible thread is 100% polyester, thus the name, Monofilament Polyester.
Another caution:  Watch out for monofilament threads labeled as 100% Polyamide. That may lead us to believe it is polyester but polyamide is the chemical word for nylon. Dishonest labeling? No. Misleading? Yes.
Be safe and stay with polyester when using monofilament threads.

$30 IDEA WINNERS
Please be our Business Consultant. E-mail your ideas to help us serve you better (products, education, website, customer service, etc.). We will award a $30 gift certificate for the best ideas.  This month's winning Consultants:

1. Darla Hall.  Thank you for showing what the NiteLite ExtraGlow threads look like while glowing. I wish the photo image had labels from left to right with the colors. I know white is the brightest and I know from experience the pink glows pink, but I can't compare the glow of your green, blue, purple or yellow threads without knowing which is which. Could you add the glow color to the individual thread color image?
Bob's Note:  Good idea.  Our photo of the glow-in-the-dark threads now has color labels attached so you can see what each color looks like when glowing.  These threads glow up to six hours, night after night.  Children and grandchildren love them.

2. Martha Ginn.  I love Hugo's Amazing Tape and use it to keep all my spools wrapped and tidy. I cut the ends with pinking shears to make the ends easier to find. While a Hugo strip is off the spool, I drape it into a cup or jar so it will be ready to reapply to the spool.
Bob's Note: Another good idea is to color the end of the tape with a marking pen so it can be easily found.

3. Carolyn Troxel.  I would love to see color names on the threads. Just ordered black #50 Tire silk thread and had to call to see if the black that looked black on the website color chart was really black or dark blue.
Bob's Note: Done.  Color names added to all 171 colors of #50 Tire silk and other silk threads.

4. Cathi Dix.  Your OMNI thread is my new "go to" thread for any solid color thread quilting.  I bought two OMNI thread cards. I use one to check off the colors I own. The other I have taken apart (cut the strips off the card) so I can lay the strips of thread on the quilt top to see which hue is the best choice.
Bob's Note:  This is not an attempt to sell more OMNI color books (we sell them at our production cost so there is no profit), but this is great idea.

5. Elizabeth Broussard.  An idea that I would like to submit has to do with finding the notch on the spool ends and cone bases that hold the thread tails.  Mark the notch with a Sharpie. You will never have to search for that elusive notch again when putting away the thread!

BOB’S SUPERIOR JOKE of the MONTH

An elderly man in Louisiana had owned a large farm for several years. There was a large pond in the back and the spot was perfect for swimming and relaxing.  He had fixed it up nicely with picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some apple and peach trees. One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the pond, as he hadn't been there for a while, and look it over.  He grabbed a five-gallon bucket to bring back some fruit. As he neared the pond, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee. As he came closer, he saw it was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his pond. He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end.
One of the women shouted to him, “We're not coming out until you leave!”
The old man frowned, “I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim.” Holding the bucket up he said, “I'm here to feed the alligator.”
