Superior Threads December 2011 Newsletter

WISE WORDS FROM MOTHER SUPERIOR
Thank you for being part of our lives this year.

EDUCATION: Introducing SUPERIOR UNIVERSITY and EFFECTIVE LEARNING
We remember 10% of what we read or hear, 50% of what we see, and nearly 100% of what we do. For over 10 years, we have been dedicated to teaching the quilting, embroidery, and sewing world about thread, needles, tension, and successful sewing.
10% effective: Reading the newsletters or by attending a seminar.
50% effective: Watching 100+ educational videos on our website.
100% effective: Hands-on guided experience.  We realize that 99% of our customers cannot attend our School of Threadology; therefore, to provide actual hands-on education to you, in your home, we have developed Superior University.  Think of it as independent study, correspondence study, or distance learning.  As with all our education efforts (newsletter, videos, seminars, School of Threadology), Superior University has been designed to teach everything we know at a not-for-profit price.

Our Purpose  To help you expand your knowledge and skills in sewing-related techniques and learn to successfully use  products you have may not have previously used.
Our Method  Each month we will send you a carefully designed project including selected products. You will receive a simple pattern and easy-to-follow instructions to create a project.  Many projects will include a product or technique you have never tried before.
Our Goal  To help you increase your knowledge and use of threads and related products which will add more possibilities to your projects.

Estimated Time Requirement  30 to 90 minutes per project.

Materials  Upon registration, we will send the following:
-- Lab Book (3-ring binder with page protectors)
-- Our new 96-page color booklet, What Makes Us Superior, which includes numerous Reference Guides
-- Superior Topstitch Needles (assortment pack of five needles and includes four different needle sizes)
-- One spool of Bottom Line thread which you will use on all monthly projects
-- Lab sheet for recording information when using new threads
-- One time Supply Fee for above items: $29.95 including shipping (USA addresses). Discounted shipping for international addresses.
Not included are fabric (we know you have plenty) and basic sewing supplies.

Tuition  $16.95 per month (including shipping to U.S. addresses).  Includes the monthly project, featured thread and/or products for that month’s project, pattern, and instructions.  International addresses will have reduced-rate shipping.

The Small Print  Open enrollment.  Start and stop any time.  No contract.  No registration fees/federal excise taxes/dealer prep/fuel surcharges, destination charges, or other fast-talking hidden charges.

BEST of the BEST CONTEST for $30 IDEA WINNERS
Please vote for your favorite $30 winning idea of the year.  All the winning ideas are posted on the Winner's Page, where you can vote for the best idea of the year.
One vote per computer. Voting ends midnight (Mountain Time) on Dec. 31, 2011 and the two winners will be announced in next month's newsletter.
1st Place Prize: $250 Gift Certificate
2nd Place Prize: $150 Gift Certificate

$30 IDEA WINNERS Please be our Business Consultant.  Post your ideas here to help us serve you better (products, education, website, customer service, etc.). We will award a $30 gift certificate for the best ideas.  This month's winning Consultants:

1. and 2.  Vicki Kauth and Faith Kinkner. The thread set and Threadology DVD is a great idea.  How about selling the thread kit separately for those of us who already have the DVD?
Bob’s Note: We had many requests for this and Vicki and Faith were the first to suggest it.  The Thread Set is now available without the DVD.

3. Nancy Swanton.  I have been using Hugo's Amazing Tape for years! I put strips of it on the bottom of my acrylic rulers to keep them from slipping. Much better than the sandpaper dots or rubber ones.  You can still see clearly though the acrylic ruler and the tape.  The tape can be removed and reused.

4. Nancy Gilliland.  I love all the $30 ideas that are posted and sometimes I would like to read them again. How about adding them to the "Other" section on the web page so they can quickly be referred to?
Bob’s Note: Done.  All are available for reading on the $30 Winning Ideas page.

5.  Ruth Gregg.  I use the Hugo's tape on my thread but the 2" wide Hugo's tape works best on my large cones of thread. Could you please add the 2" wide size to your inventory? It is very hard to find, and if you had it, I would be able to get it easily!
Bob’s Note: It is here.  2" wide Hugo’s tape.

6. Ashley Malinowski. My Idea is when you use the search engine on your website and, for instance, type in color 918. Then when I click on either the 500 yd. or 2.000 yd. images to enlarge the picture of the thread, there is no color description. If you could add the color descriptions, it would be so extremely helpful.
Bob’s Note. This project took a couple months but it has been completed.

The new class setting in St. George, Utah offers a new retreat format that allows a quiet, wonderful atmosphere for fun, fiber and function. The sessions are reasonably priced and detailed information about the teachers, class descriptions, location, and opportunities are available at  SilkCentralOnline.com or contact Maggie via e-mail. BOB’S RECOMMENDATION
What I believe to be the most innovative quilting-related Internet company in the world is Websites For Quilters.  They also developed many websites in the quilting world including the FindMyFabric website, and the Quilter's Daily Special website.  We use them and highly recommend them.  (This is an unpaid plug for them because we like the superior work they do.)  For more information, please click here.  They have designed hundreds of websites for quilting-related individuals and companies, as well as non-quilting related websites.

BOB’S SUPERIOR JOKE of the MONTH

Each December, instead of a Joke of the Month, I write a Christmas message.  Please read and enjoy this year's Christmas message.

BOB'S CHRISTMAS MESSAGE
As the calendar says the year is drawing to a close, the best season is just getting started. Perhaps Christmas is celebrated at this time of year to bring extra joy to the cold wintry days and brighter light to the shorter days.  My life, my hope, my deep inner feelings and beliefs are greatly influenced by Christmas.  The Christmas carols sing truth to me. The birth of God’s son, the gift of his example and his life, his unwavering love for us, and his atoning sacrifice for us.  Christmas is my favorite time of year because it is a source of joy, brightness, good cheer, and love. We think of others more than ourselves.  I think of my father, who passed away in September this year.  He was a very good man.  A person of integrity, hard working, and generous. On that day, I wrote, “Dad made it. He endured. He graduated. He is free of pain and physical limitations. He would tell us to celebrate that. I always tried to honor him. I always loved him. I still love him. And somehow, I love him even more today. And I will tell him that when I see him again.”  One gift of Christmas is knowing there is life beyond this mortal time and that provides great motivation and joy to me.

As a parent or grandparent, is there anything better than seeing the joy on a child’s or grandchild’s face when they open a gift we gave to them? We feel as much or perhaps even more joy than they do. I imagine it is the same with our Heavenly Father when we accept the gifts he offers us.  Gifts of life, both here and beyond, promised through the life and resurrection of his son.  Gifts of unconditional love which show us how to love others.  Gifts of total forgiveness as we recognize our mistakes and try to do better.  Gifts of inspiration as we read his words and communicate through prayer.

We celebrate Christmas, the birth and life of Jesus Christ, the son of God.  We look to Him as the perfect example.  He is the source of love and light and joy.  So sing along with the Christmas carols.  Celebrate their messages.  Show extra patience and kindness to others, both strangers and the estranged, to family and to friends. Feel the love and joy of Christmas and share it with others.
MERRY CHRISTMAS from Bob and Heather Purcell
